Suddenly Last Summer • Playwright: Tennessee Williams • Director: Greg Stevens

Suddenly Last Summer

Tennessee Williams tells a horrific tale in the southern gothic prose that only he could write. He tells the story of Sebastian, who uses the two women in his life to lure the young men he desires, only to face death at the hands of those same men. A legendary play, later an iconic movie, written by the master: the one and only Tennessee Williams.

Beautiful Thing • Playwright: Jonathan Harvey • Director: Jeanette Buck

Beautiful Thing

Two London working class teenagers begin a relationship first as neighbors, then friends, and finally lovers. The struggle for a relationship to succeed is difficult under the best of situations, but then family and friends make their thoughts, both pro and con, known. A very romantic play about that first, and perhaps greatest, love.

Solo Shows

Solo performances written and originally performed by two of the legendary and infamous NEA-4, the Rainbow Theatre Project pays tribute to these icons of the LGBTQ community who show us that a single voice can matter. Two local actors on two separate evenings take on the funny and sharp-witted words of two extraordinary writers exploring sexual and gender identity.

Get Used To It! A Musical Revue • Composer/Lyricist: Tom Wilson Weinberg • Director: H. Lee Gable

Get Used to It

We are born with the promise of freedom, equality and love. Tom Wilson Weinberg covers the struggles our community faces in our search for those universal desires. In the course of eighteen songs, he gives us the romantic (Who Did Langston Love?), the intense (Bat Boy), the whimsical (Three-Letter Word), the outrageous (Flaunting It!), and the political (Means To A End). This musical revue that was very timely for the early nineties has become even more relevant for today as we face many of the same obstacles in our search for love and acceptance.

Generation Q

Short and to the Point: Transgender People Deserve Our Respect • Director: Christopher Janson

Transgender

Six new short plays presented before the three classic readings and the three Saturday evening performances of Get Used To It! Each season, Rainbow Theatre Project will commission a series of plays focused on a group of the LGBTQ community. This season, we focus on our Transgender brothers and sisters. In our 2016–2017 season, we plan to highlight the Latino and Latina members of our community.

Proposed Program for Youth and School Outreach

During the 2015–2016 season, we will research the feasibility and requirements to create a program for outreach to youth organizations and local schools, with the goal to implement during the 2016–2017 season.

Quote for the 2015–2016 Season from the Artistic Director:

"It has seemed to me that for every step forward we make as a community, someone is there trying to push us back. As I explored this phenomenon, I found myself drifting back to a time in the early nineties when we had been battling the AIDS crisis going on a decade and gathering strength as a community. The drug cocktail for AIDS treatment was still in the future, as was gay marriage or gays serving openly in the military.

These were dreams that I, among many others, thought we could fight for, but not see in our lifetime. We have achieved those goals, but still face an uphill battle for acceptance. These plays, for the most part, show that the arguments that were used to deny us basic human rights are the same arguments being used to try to take away those rights that we have achieved. The more things change, the more things stay the same.

These plays, again for the most part, also highlight that under the most stressful of situations, we as a community find strength in our friends and the humor to survive with dignity and love."

-H. Lee Gable
